Timber Finishing & Painting Auckland
The finish is what you actually touch and see every day, and it's usually the first thing to weather. We finish everything we build, and we come back to refinish what we didn't build ourselves.
The process
A full timber renovation is chemical cleaning and scrubbing back to a clean, sound surface, then a primer coat, then the top coats — not a fresh coat of stain brushed straight over whatever is already sitting there on the boards themselves.
Skipping the strip-back is the single biggest reason a repaint fails within a year, and it is the step most tempting to skip because it looks fine until the paint starts lifting off the grain.
Products and application
We use premium paint throughout, spray-applied for an even coat across the grain on pine and fencing — a brush leaves lap marks and an uneven build-up that a spray gun simply does not produce.
The same process and the same products go on new builds and existing timber we did not build ourselves, so a re-finish sits alongside the rest of the job rather than looking like a patch-up bolted on afterward.
Hardwood — oiled or left to silver
Hardwood decking can be oiled to hold its original colour, or left untreated to weather naturally to silver over time. Both are legitimate choices with genuinely different maintenance needs, and it's worth deciding before the timber goes down rather than discovering the difference a year later on down the track.
Oiled timber needs periodic re-coating; silvered timber needs almost no maintenance at all.
Maintenance and re-finishing
Re-staining weathered timber and replacing failed boards is a service in its own right, separate from anything we build new, and it costs a fraction of a full rebuild from scratch every single time.
Most of what looks like a tired deck or fence is a finish problem sitting on a sound structure underneath, not a structural one — telling the difference before quoting is most of the job.
Consents and compliance
Refinishing and re-staining existing timber is cosmetic maintenance, not structural work, so it does not need a building consent on its own, in almost every case.

Common questions
Do you only finish timber you've built, or existing decks and fences too?
Both — refinishing existing, weathered timber is a real service on its own, separate from new builds.
What products do you use?
Premium paint, applied by spray gun for an even coat.
Will my hardwood deck keep its colour or turn grey?
Depends on whether it's oiled (holds colour) or left bare (silvers naturally) — both are fine, it's a choice, not a defect either way.
